One of PaLM's key achievements is its success in the DeepFix Code Repair task, where it fine-tunes a large language model (LLM) named PaLM-Coder 540B to fix compilation errors in code by suggesting corrections that result in compiled versions of the code. This breakthrough opens up opportunities for fixing more complex errors during software development and pushes the boundaries of AI's role in this domain.

Google Research PaLM also excels in generating human-like text, as demonstrated in various language understanding and generation tasks. For instance, it achieved state-of-the-art few-shot performance on hundreds of such tasks, outperforming competitors by significant margins. Additionally, the researchers trained the model with the Pathways system, enabling efficient training across multiple TPU v4 Pods.

Moreover, PaLM has shown remarkable natural language understanding and generation capabilities on several BIG-bench tasks. It can distinguish cause and effect, understand conceptual combinations in appropriate contexts, and even guess the movie from an emoji.
